Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson, who is recovering from foot surgery, hopes to start skating within 2-3 weeks.
Karlsson, who had surgery to repair four torn tendons in his left foot June 14, finished the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 18 points (two goals, 16 assists) in 19 games despite playing with two hairline fractures in his left heel and muscle damage in his ankle.
"It's progressing," Karlsson told TSN during the Senators' charity golf tournament Monday. "It's been the appropriate amount of time for me to start using it. Obviously, I haven't started skating yet. I don't know when that will be, probably in the next 2-3 weeks depending on how things go. Overall, not too worried about where I'm at or how it's looking right now. I think that everything is pretty much going as expected."
Karlsson will not return until he's 100 percent, meaning he could miss opening night, something he told NHL.com last week during the NHL Player Media Tour in New York. The Senators host the Washington Capitals at Canadian Tire Centre on Oct. 5.
"Whenever I'm actually 100 percent, I'm going to come back and play, whether that's in October or November," Karlsson told TSN. "For me personally, it's not going to make a difference. When I do decide to come back, it's going to be 100 percent and I'm going to be ready to play, and not make sure that it's going to be an injury I'm going to battle with for the next 2-3 years.
"I think I'm going to need at least two weeks probably to get into skating shape. Whether I feel good after those two weeks will be a determination that's going to have to be made at the time. I don't know. You never know how's it's going to react when I start skating. As of right now we're not looking like it's going to be an issue once the time starts for me to start skating."
Center Chris VandeVelde signed a professional tryout agreement with the Ottawa Senators.
VandeVelde, 30, received an invitation to Senators training camp, which begins Thursday. He had 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 81 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season and could earn a bottom-six role with the Senators.
VandeVelde has 48 points (18 goals, 30 assists) in 278 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers and Flyers.

Ottawa’s hockey staff will attend the rookie tournament to finalize the list of players that will be invited to the Senators main camp, which starts Sept. 14.
The rookie tournament schedule will open when Montreal plays Toronto on Sept. 8 (7 p.m.) and continue with the Senators facing the Canadians on Sept. 9 (7 p.m. and conclude with Ottawa playing the Leafs on Sept. 10 (4 p.m.)
Thirteen of the 23 rookies were drafted by the team, one was obtained in a trade, three were signed as free agents and six are on tryouts.
The goalies will be Marcus Hogberg (third round, 2013) and Jordan Hollett (sixth round, 2017).
The eight defencemen include Charles-David Beaudoin (free agent), Chabot (18th overall, 2015), Cody Donaghey (trade), Andreas Englund (2nd round, 2014), Macoy Erkamps (free agent), Christian Jaros (5th round, 2015), Maxime Lajoie (5th round, 2016) and Jordan Murray (tryout).
The forwards will be Drake Batherson (4th round, 2017), Brown (11th overall, 2016), Filip Chlapik (2nd round, 2015), Bobby Dow (tryout), Alex Formenton (2nd round, 2017), Gabriel Gagne (2nd round, 2015), Matteo Gennaro (7th round, Winnipeg, 2015), Parker Kelly (tryout), Francis Perron (7th round, 2014), Jack Rodewald (free agent), Pius Suter (tryout), Jordan Topping (tryout) and White (21st overall, 2015).

Neil will replace Stephen Brooks, who recently departed for a position with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rák vihette el, 2014 óta küzdött vele és már akkor mikor diagnosztizálták is áttétes volt elég sok szervére. Nagyszerű GM volt én kedveltem, hiába volt elég konzervatív sokszor (Dorionhoz képest), ha kellett mindig meghúzta amit kellett és draftolni nagyon tudott. Biztos helye van a Hall of Fameben.
Yes, there has been talk that the Washington Capitals will allow winger Alex Ovechkin to attend to play with Russia, but if Ottawa captain Erik Karlsson wanted to go suit up for Sweden, Melnyk doesn’t believe that would be possible.
It’s believed the league will have a blanket policy on the subject before the season.
“If (Karlsson) came to me it would simply be a referral to the NHL offices,” Melnyk said. “They took over. I don’t have to make a decision. The decision was made by them. He has to deal with whatever those meetings if they occur.”
Melnyk said the Olympics should be a stage for amateur players.
Daniel Alfredsson, the best player in Senators history, was the best man. Erik’s kid brother, Pelle, was a groomsman. And of course there were a lot of NHLers, including both current and former Senators.
Craig Anderson, Cody Ceci, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Dion Phaneuf, Kyle Turris, Clarke MacArthur and Fredrik Claesson were in attendance.
“It’s been a great summer,” shouted Freddy, who could be Karlsson’s on-ice partner when the next hockey season begins.
